ACCOUNTING MANAGER

Key Responsibilities
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the full-cycle accounting operations of the firm, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and supporting strategic financial planning. Reporting to the Director, Operations, this role supervises the Accounting Assistant and collaborates with external accountants and legal professionals.
Financial Operations
- Oversee daily accounting functions including AP, AR, bank reconciliations and journal entries.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate month-end and year -end closing.
- Manage trust accounting in compliance with Law Society of Alberta Regulations.
- Manage and execute month-end and year-end close processes on a defined schedule.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare month, quarterly and annual financial statements.
- Conduct variance analysis and provide commentary on budget vs actuals.
- Generate internal management reports for leadership.
Compliance and Controls
- Ensure compliance with CRA, GST/HST, and payroll remittance requirements.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting policies in line with legal and industry standards.
- Coordinate with external accountants for year-end review or audit.
- Ensure a continuous improvement mindset with a forwarding looking view on technology adoption.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor the accounting assistant.
- Delegate tasks and ensure timely completion of accounting cycles.
- Provide training on accounting systems and procedures.
Core Competencies
Technical Skills
- Full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
- Trust accounting (specific to legal industry)
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks Online Advanced, Clio, Dayforce, and similar).
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret financial data.
Regulatory Knowledge
- Familiarity with Law Society of Alberta trust accounting rules.
- Understanding of Canadian GAAP/ IFRS and CRA compliance.
Communication & Leadership
- Clear communicator with the ability to explain financial data.
- Experience supervising junior staff or assistants.
- Continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
- CPA Designation (or working toward it ) preferred.
- 5+ Years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a professional services or legal environment.
- Experience in a small to mid-sized firm with hands-on responsibilities.
